Meta Biomed is a manufacturer of dental supplies dental catalogand devices, headquartered in Cheongju, South Korea.  Their English language dental supply catalog had been translated into Spanish for Latin American clients several years before they came to us with a request for an updated translation. Their former translation team had not established translation memories (TMs), however, so updating the Spanish-language catalog with new information required more work than an update project normally would. MTM LinguaSoft was asked to start from scratch in providing a comprehensive Spanish translation of the current English-language catalog.

The catalog and IFUs (Instructions for Use) were created using Adobe Illustrator (AI), so we ran into some challenges. To export all the translatable text, we converted the English AI files into SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) files. These were then uploaded into a Computer-Assisted Translation (CAT) tool to ensure consistency of terminology across the catalog and all the IFUs. Another challenge was that some Korean fonts appeared in the English AI files. These generated additional formatting tags when the content was imported into the CAT tool, which required filtering. Because the catalog pages and IFUs were created with one file per page, many individual files were prepared for translation.

We provided the prepped files to a team of Latin American translators who specialized in dentistry. They used the old Spanish catalog as reference material as much as possible.  We then turned the project over to a multilingual desktop publishing team to adapt the layout of the translated Illustrator files to compensate for text expansion, validate the line breaks, and adjust the fonts.

Now that a comprehensive translation memory has been developed, the customer can be sure that the next update of their Spanish-language catalog will be faster and far more economical.
